Time Series Data

The time series data is used to evaluate control performance and to identify the root causes of various malfunctions.

Data Export

A Data Request Time Series file is provided to make export of the time series data easier and to define the signals and data collection details. It is prepared after review of the documentation to save you valuable time and provide you with the results as quickly as possible. It is important that equal sample times must be used for each signal and that interpolated data is used for data gathering.
For data analysis it is necessary to have two sets of data. The long term set is a year-long period of operational data which is primarily used for statistical evaluation. It is recommended to select a one-year period with as much normal operation as possible. The sampling time shouldn't be less than 20 minutes.

A Short term five-day period of operational data is used for analysis of the performance of the regulatory controls and process dynamics. It is recommended to select at least five days of typical operational data. The sampling time shouldn't be greater than 20 seconds.

Short term 5 days period of operational data is used for performance analysis of regulatory controls and process dynamics. It is recommended to select at least 5 days of typical operational data. The sampling time shouldn't be greater than 20 seconds.

For a special type of production process the data export scenario may be different. In this case we will advise you how to export data suitable for analysis.

Configuration recommendations
Data collection strategies balance the amounts of data stored and the required data resolution. In some cases the process data history is so over compressed that it is impossible to analyse further. It is recommended to collect each control signal (PV, SP, OP) without significant compression.
Reconfiguration of process history data collection system is required only if the following requirements are not fulfilled:

  • controlled process value (PV), setpoint (SP) and manipulated values (MV or OP) are not collected

  • resolution is not sufficient for data analysis.

Laboratory Data

Laboratory data is used for analysis of the performance of quality control in the system.

Data Export
A Data Request Laboratory file is provided to make export of the time series data easier and to define the signals and data collection details. It is prepared after review of the documentation to save you valuable time and provide you with the results as quickly as possible. It is important that all laboratory sample timestamps and values are collected as raw values.

LIMS data export
In the case that data can be exported from a laboratory information management system, you can send us this exported data.

Operator Schematics

Print screens of the process unit during normal operating conditions. The process layout is important for localising the identified under-performing control loops.

Operator screens can be captured by print screens. The screens requested are the ones which are in the scope of the problematic areas and connected to utility systems as well.

Requirements for operator schematic print screens:

  • Control module tag names should be visible

  • The taken print screens should represent normal operation

  • Pictures should be saved in PNG file format

If the operator schematic are not clear, the P&ID documentation must be supplied.

Process Control System Configuration

The Data Request Configuration file is provided to export the required control system parameters and variables. The required parameters are collected in a table shown as sample below. For specific control system parameter names a separate document is attached.

Some key parameters of controller configuration are required. Every process control system is slightly different therefore we give a customised list for each control system with the required parameters.

Genaral Parameter name
Description
PID/Gain The gain is used in the PID algorithm.
PID/Integral Time The integral time in engineering units.
PID/Derivative Time The derivative time and derivative filter in engineering units.
PID/Filters The PV, SP, OP filters in engineering units.
PID/Limits Typically this includes setpoint rate limits, setpoint filter and OP limits
PID/Algorithm The specified PID algorithm type like Standard, Serial or Parallel.
PID/Form The specified PID equation form like “PI acts on Error", "D acts on PV”, etc.
Other control parameters Other elements of the control loop configuration are detailed only if the current process performance is limited by the control performance.

Process Description

The Process Description is an extract describing how the process works and should be operated. The documentation usually provided by the technology licencor. This documentation does not exists for all production plants, provide only if it is available.

Piping and Instrumentation Diagram (P&ID)

All pages which cover the process area selected for investigation should be provided.

Additionally the following pages should be supplied:

  • Symbol list

  • Abbreviation list

  • Instrumentation legend (optional)

  • Equipment legend (optional)

Process Flow Diagram

The process flow diagram gives a better understanding of technology licencor or designer was expected to operate the process within the defined conditions.

Event History

Event history is needed for inspection of sequential events combined with process and control dynamical behaviour. For example unexpected shutdowns, malfunctions of controls during start-up or problems with synchronous processes.

Abbreviations:

PID: Proportional integral derivative control algorithm
PV: The measured value to be controlled
SP: The desired value to keep the measured value around.
OP: The output value of the PID controller
